Sustainable living

Costa Rica runs largely on renewable electricity and protects a quarter of its land. Living lightly here is easier than most places — and the climate rewards it.

In this chapter

Most grid electricity is renewable, but bills still reward efficiency: AC only where needed, fans first, good shading and cross-ventilation, and solar water heating or on-demand heaters instead of large tanks. In the dry season, water conservation matters; tanks, low-flow fixtures and rainwater awareness are practical, not just virtuous.

Design and maintain for the climate rather than against it: shade, airflow and drainage reduce both your bills and your mold problems.
