Culture shock & adapting to expat life

Culture shock is not a failure — it is the normal process of your expectations meeting a different reality. Work with it and it passes.

In this chapter

Honeymoon: everything is charming. Frustration: everything is slow, confusing or broken. Adjustment: you develop workarounds and relationships. Belonging: the place becomes home. The stages repeat in smaller waves, often triggered by bureaucracy, illness or a visit home.

The frustration stage is where moves fail. Expect it, name it when it arrives, and use your anchors — routines, friends, the reason you came — rather than making escape decisions mid-wave.
