Is Costa Rica right for me?

An honest self-assessment before you spend money on flights, shipping or applications. The right answer for someone else is not the right answer for you.

In this chapter

Ask what your ordinary Tuesday looks like: work calls, cooking, laundry, errands, healthcare appointments, school runs. A move succeeds when ordinary days work, not when the scenery is beautiful. Write down the five things you do most often and test each one during a scouting trip.

Separate what you want to escape from what you want to find. If the things you dislike will follow you — your work stress, your habits, your relationships — a new country will not fix them. If you are seeking a different pace, climate and community, Costa Rica may genuinely deliver.

  • Can I work or live well with the internet and power reliability where I would live?
  • Am I comfortable being a learner again — language, systems, directions?
  • Do I need nightlife, specialist healthcare or specific shops within easy reach?
  • How do I handle inconvenience: a closed road, a delayed delivery, a power cut?
