Do I need a car to live in the Southern Zone?
Last reviewed by Jules · October 25, 2026
Having a vehicle is highly recommended when living in Costa Rica's Southern Zone, particularly in Uvita, Ojochal, and the surrounding communities. The region is fairly spread out, and many homes, beaches, restaurants, and services are not within comfortable walking distance. The tropical heat and heavy seasonal rains can also make walking less practical. Public buses are available, but routes and schedules can be limiting. Uber is not widely available or consistently reliable in the area, and regular taxi use can become expensive. While it's possible to live without a vehicle in certain central areas of Uvita, you'll likely depend on taxis or other transportation for groceries, appointments, and everyday errands. A 4x4 is recommended, especially if you're considering mountain properties or exploring rural roads. Not every home requires one, but having a vehicle provides significantly more freedom and convenience.
Having your own vehicle is highly recommended when living in the Southern Zone, particularly in Uvita, Ojochal, Dominical, and the surrounding communities.
While it is possible to live without a car in certain locations, the region is not particularly walkable, and having reliable transportation makes everyday life considerably easier.
Distances and Everyday Convenience
The Southern Zone is quite spread out. Residential communities, supermarkets, restaurants, beaches, schools, medical services, and other amenities are often separated by several kilometers.
Even when something appears close on a map, the actual walking route may involve steep hills, limited sidewalks, narrow roads, or areas without pedestrian infrastructure.
Costa Rica's tropical climate is another consideration. High temperatures, humidity, and heavy rainfall can make walking uncomfortable, particularly when carrying groceries or traveling with children.
Living Without a Vehicle
It is possible to live without a car, particularly in central Uvita, where some supermarkets, restaurants, banks, and everyday services may be within walking distance.
However, you'll likely still need transportation for larger grocery trips, medical appointments, visiting beaches, and exploring surrounding communities.
Ojochal is more spread out, with residential neighborhoods and amenities often separated by greater distances. Depending on where you live, even a short trip to a restaurant or supermarket may require a vehicle.
Public Transportation and Taxis
Public buses connect major towns along the coastal highway and provide an affordable transportation option.
However, routes and schedules can be limited, particularly for reaching residential neighborhoods, mountain properties, and locations away from the main highway.
Uber is not widely established in the Southern Zone, and availability can be inconsistent.
Local taxis and private drivers are available, but relying on them regularly can become expensive, particularly for families or people making frequent trips.
Do You Need a 4x4?
A 4x4 is strongly recommended for anyone considering a home in the mountains or exploring rural areas.
Many properties are accessed by steep roads, gravel surfaces, or roads that become more challenging during the rainy season.
Some locations genuinely require four-wheel drive, while others are accessible year-round with a regular vehicle.
If you're renting a home, always confirm the access requirements before selecting a rental car.
If you're purchasing property, consider road conditions during both the dry and rainy seasons. A property that is easily accessible in February may be considerably more challenging to reach during periods of heavy rainfall.
Renting vs. Buying a Vehicle
For shorter stays or during the initial stages of relocation, renting a vehicle can be a practical option.
It allows you to explore different communities, understand local driving conditions, and determine which type of vehicle best suits your lifestyle before making a purchase.
For longer-term residents, purchasing a vehicle may eventually be more economical, depending on how frequently you drive and how long you intend to stay.
Our Recommendation
If you're planning to live in Uvita, Ojochal, or the surrounding Southern Zone, we strongly recommend budgeting for a vehicle.
Although some central locations allow for a relatively walkable lifestyle, having a car provides much greater independence, convenience, and flexibility.
A 4x4 is not essential for every property, but it is particularly valuable for mountain living, rural roads, and exploring the region.
Before committing to a rental or purchasing a home, consider how accessible the property is, what type of vehicle you'll need, and how far you'll be from the services you use regularly.
At The Conscious Concierge Costa Rica, we help clients evaluate these practical lifestyle considerations so they can choose a location and property that genuinely suit their everyday needs.
