One of the great gifts of living in the Southern Zone is how close we are to some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Costa Rica. Within a short drive of Uvita, Dominical and Ojochal, you can spend a full day chasing water through the jungle — from easy family-friendly stops to bigger adventures deep in the mountains.
Here are a few of my favourites in the Costa Ballena and Southern Zone.
Nauyaca Waterfalls
Near Dominical
Nauyaca is the most iconic waterfall in the Costa Ballena — two dramatic tiers pouring into a big, deep swimming pool. You can hike in, take a 4×4 shuttle, or ride horses from the entrance. The pool at the base is safe for swimming and one of the best spots in the region for a jungle picnic day.
Chontales Waterfall
Above Uvita
Chontales is one of the tallest waterfalls in the area and a personal favourite. It sits up in the mountains above Uvita, with a moderate hike down through the jungle and a beautiful emerald pool at the base. Cooler water, quieter crowds, and the kind of view that makes you stop and breathe.

A short drive from downtown Uvita, this one is the easiest to reach — a quick walk in, a natural rock slide, and a lovely pool for cooling off. Great for kids and a perfect afternoon stop on a hot day.
Diamante Waterfall
Southern Zone mountains
Diamante is one of the tallest waterfalls in Costa Rica — a full-day adventure with a longer hike, incredible views, and the option to stay overnight at the treehouse lodge behind the falls. Best paired with an overnight or an early start.
A few tips before you go
- ·Go early — light is better and the crowds are smaller.
- ·Bring water shoes; the rocks around every pool can be slippery.
- ·Cash in colones for entrance fees and parking at private-access falls.
- ·Check conditions in rainy season — water rises fast after heavy rain.
- ·Leave nothing behind. These are still wild spaces.
The waterfalls are one of the great joys of living here. Whether you're visiting for a week or settling in for the long haul, they're worth making time for again and again.
