One of my favourite things about living in Costa Ballena is how easy it is to connect with local food, local farmers, and the incredible abundance that this region offers. Shopping at the local markets has become part of my weekly rhythm, and honestly, I can't imagine living here any other way.
I personally go to the markets religiously every Wednesday and Saturday. Not only is it a wonderful way to support local producers and artisans, but it also allows our family to eat fresher, healthier food while significantly reducing our grocery costs.
Why shop local?
Costa Rica's grocery stores can be surprisingly expensive, especially when it comes to imported goods. Specialty products, organic items, gluten-free products, imported snacks, and certain fruits and vegetables can often cost much more than newcomers expect.
By shopping locally, you can save a considerable amount of money while enjoying fresher produce and supporting small family businesses and local farmers. The quality is often exceptional, with many items harvested just hours before they arrive at market.

If possible, I highly recommend arriving early. The best selection of produce, meats, fish, baked goods, and specialty items is usually available in the morning before the crowds arrive.

The atmosphere itself is part of the experience. You'll often run into neighbours, meet local farmers, and discover new products each week.
Other wonderful markets in the area
Tinamastes Market
Tuesdays · 8:00 AM
The Tinamastes market is one of the largest and most well-known farmers markets in the Southern Zone. It has a beautiful community atmosphere and offers a wide variety of produce, prepared foods, artisanal products, plants, wellness items, and organic offerings.
Ojochal Market
Wednesdays
A smaller but lovely local market where you can find fresh produce, artisanal products, and support local vendors within the Ojochal community.
Dominical Market
Fridays
The Dominical market has a vibrant atmosphere and attracts both locals and visitors. It's a wonderful place to browse for produce, prepared foods, crafts, natural products, and gifts.
Roadside fruit stands
Don't overlook the roadside stands throughout Costa Ballena and the Southern Zone. Some of the freshest pineapples, bananas, mangos, papayas, avocados, coconuts, and seasonal fruits can often be found right along the side of the road.
Stopping at these little stands is one of the simple pleasures of living in Costa Rica and another great way to support local families directly.
Payment methods
Most vendors now accept several payment methods, including:

However, I still recommend bringing Costa Rican colones, as some smaller vendors prefer cash, and you'll often find it easier for smaller purchases.
More than just shopping
For many of us who live here, the markets are more than simply a place to buy groceries. They are a gathering place, a way to connect with the community, support local families, discover seasonal foods, and embrace a slower, more intentional lifestyle.
Eating locally has become one of the greatest joys of living in Costa Ballena. It allows us to eat fresher, healthier food, save money, and truly experience the richness and abundance of this beautiful region.
